Antique Hand Carved Wooden Folding Stool, Ornate Hand Carved Folding Wooden head rest

A highly ornate 19th Century hand carved symmetrical design folding headrest or foldable stool.

This piece has interlocking pieces of wood (probably cedar). No metal hinges or screws are used in the construction of this piece and it is carved from one piece of wood it seems. Origin is believed to be from Afghanistan or Pakistan but could be from Northern Africa as well.

The patina on the wood is exquisite, I am sure the photos does not show the beauty of this piece. It is in very good condition strong and sturdy.

This is a very old piece, certainly from around 1820's. It will make a wonderful accent piece in any interior and could certainly last another 100 years.

RARE Huge Turquoise gem spider web markings, Antique Afghanistan Tribal Cuff Bracelet, Afghan Antique Tribal DOUBLE finger ring Lapis Lazuli

A few times a year for my personal taste I run into a piece that is simply phenomenal.

This set would be one of those times. I absolutely love them both.

An authentic tribal Pashtun/Kuchi/Afghan bracelet and double fingered ring hand crafted by Pashtun craftsmen from Afghanistan. The Kuchi people are Pashtun speaking people who live in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The bangle has a centered large Turquoise stone flanked by four smaller stones. They all have a beautiful natural spider web effects that is found in these beautiful gems in nature. The ring is a double fingered design for the ring and middle fingers. It also has a centered Turquoise stone on the top as well as the base of the ring. It is embellished with filigrain set with Lapis Lazuli stones and red coral through the coils.
These items are of a lower silver grade than the Western countries and are usually 800 parts. These pieces are very old and have had previous owners as is the case with vintage and antique items so you can see some wear in the items. They are in very good vintage condition.

I don’t believe them to be a set but I have paired them together as I think they complement each other quite beautifully.

The bracelet measures 9.00 inches and can adjust down to 7.00 inches or a bit smaller.
The rings measure sizes are European 21 and 22 and American sizes 11.5 and 12 approx. for the ring finger and middle fingers.

An extraordinary Vintage bone necklace, Wasekaseka or Wàseisei, Tribal art

Examples of these elaborate, labour-intensive forms of bodily adornment were worn by Fijian chiefs in the mid-to late 1800s. Not only are they aesthetically beautiful, wàseisei are precious examples of Pacific Island creativity and craftsmanship. Some forms of these neck ornaments are also found in different African tribes.  Appanage of high-ranking men, this Wasekaseka necklaces from the Viti Islands (now known as Fiji) consists of 48 pieces of marine or terrestrial bones carved to resemble teeth, nuanced hues and slightly curved ends, symmetrically arranged and assembled on a strong ligature. These are NOT whale teeth but BONE.

The individual bones in this piece are artistically hand carved and curved to resemble teeth thus also are of all different sizes and shapes.

They are all beautiful with a dark patina from oils of the skin, hands and general aging.

All the pieces are separated by a bead/bone and all held together with a piece of string. The necklace was later adorned with a brown leather woven fiber that is attached with two silver clasps for easy wearing today.

Antique Qianlong-style enamel warm wine pot

Chinese Cloisonné Silver Mounted Hot Wine Pot / Kettle, c1900. The pot is removable. Filigree Phoenix birds, and dragons on the sides with a monkey figure finial. Decorated with enamel panels of figures in a landscape with foliage and building.

In ancient and modern Chinese culture, the phoenix bird and dragon can often be found in the decorations for weddings or royalty, along with dragons. This is because the Chinese considered the dragon-and-phoenix design symbolic of blissful relations between husband and wife, another common yang and yin metaphor.

Approx. Measurements: 3.30" height x 3.30"

Chinese varieties of sorghum-distilled "baijiu", including Maotai and Gaoliang, are usually served warm or at room temperature. Pots like this are used to keep the contents of the pourer warm, so would accommodate such wines as well as tea if need be.

The bottom mark says "Pure Silver (zuyin), but it looks a lot more like pewter in the photos

It’s a true little gem, perfect for you teapot collection or cloisonné collection.

Antique Photo Album with wedded couples, 40 French romance, courtship, children, babies photo from early 1900’s

Antique photo album and black and white photo collection with 41 photos included in great vintage condition.
A wonderful look into the social history of the early 1900’s.
In the back of the album is a music box that DOES NOT work but can perhaps be restored. Regardless it is still a little gem even without the music.

Photos depict life from circa 1900’s/ to 20s. There are children, babies, families, black and white scenes, romantic photos, life of the times.
Photos are in good condition with writing and dates on some on the rear. A very intricate collection that still is in excellent condition.
The most awesome thing about this collection is that a few have handwritten sentiments to family and friends and location on the backs. It gives you a glimpse into life and the thoughts of people in years gone by.

Album measures 11.00"x 8.50”

Condition is poor to good. The velvet on the cover is worn in one corner where I assume ancient fingers touched it to open and close it. The lock is loose and like mentioned above the music box does not play. I still think it is a beautiful piece and warms my heart to see the photos in wonderment of the lives they've lived.

A hound’s head stirrup cup, Antique Pewter/Silver Rhyton cup

This beautiful and unusual Rhyton or Stirrup cup, is one unlike I have seen before given the shape of the bowl and the little spout. This rhyton in the form of a Hound’s head has, semi-gloss to matte finish with reflective qualities similar to metal. The finish of the piece may intentionally imitate the appearance of tarnished silver but we believe it is Pewter or Silver plated, it also has a maker’s mark that we cannot identify. The relief details of the dog’s head and grape vines on the inside of the piece are tributes to Dionysus, the god of wine. It also stands firmly on its head.
The piece measures: 4.00 inches high and has a diameter of 4.00 inches. It is in excellent antique condition.

A RHYTON: is a horn-shaped drinking cup that originates in the Near East, but was appropriated by the Greeks, often with figural additions. This type of vessel was produced both in precious metals (gold, silver, and less frequently, bronze , pewter) for elite patrons and in ceramic and wood and other materials which was not as expensive and thus available to a wider audience.
The main function of the rhyton was to pour wine during sacrificial libations or to serve as a drinking vessel at symposiums.

A STIRRUP CUP is: a "parting cup" given to guests, especially when they are leaving and have their feet in the stirrups. It is also the traditional drink (usually port or sherry) served at the meet, prior to a traditional foxhunt. The term can describe the cup that such a drink is served in.
In Scots the host may well, in inviting his guest to stay briefly for that farewell drink, call it a "dochan doruis" (from Scottish Gaelic deoch an dorais [tʲɔx ən̪ˠ t̪ɔɾɪʃ], literally "drink of the door").

All-wooden mannequin with natural finish has intricate articulations including visible ball-jointing at throat, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hips, knees and ankles, and with unusually shaped head, fin-shaped hands, and shoe-form shaped feet;

late-1800s, very rare variation of the classic artist's mannequin with articulated torso.

Vintage French Art Deco artist's poseable articulated mannequin doll.

Ball joint articulation in great working motion. Some (two) of the pins have been replaced but works as should

Heavily reproduced in modern times, this figure is a period original.

A little History:
Essentially these three-dimensional models act as an artist’s aide-mémoire for two-dimensional work. They are found in all sizes from a few inches high up to life size. Representing the ideal proportions of the human body the majority are carved from pine, and from the 17th century are made with pivoted ball joints allowing for a natural bending and turning. The faces are always expressionless and the androgynous features of the head enable it to be dressed convincingly as either man or woman.
Lay figures have been used by artists for centuries and most probably originated in ancient Greece where they assisted sculptors in the posing of bare limbs. However, Vasari maintains the Italian Renaissance artist Fra Bartolommeo (1472 – 1517) was the first person to devise a wooden life size, fully articulated lay figure.

A little History:
The Chinese have long enjoyed the reputation of being some of the world’s most compulsive gamblers. So an enterprising trader must have seen the Chinese gambling with simple yet fine mother-of-pearl counters decorated with traditional Chinese designs, and brought some back to Europe.
The counters must have been a success because repeat orders were sent. The supercargoes were allowed space in the ship’s hold for their own personal trading and it seems that these counters were soon being brought back in large numbers. The Chinese decoration was quickly influenced by European tastes. In much the same way as the production of porcelain was an amalgam of European and Chinese styles, so it was with mother-of-pearl counters. It was the height of fashion for the rich families of Europe to have personalized Chinese porcelain dinner-services. Complex orders were placed requiring several hundred pieces of porcelain to be decorated with a monogram, family crest, coat of arms or in some cases all three, copied from an original sent with the trader. The logistics of this are quite incredible: an order was decided perhaps in Devon for three hundred pieces of blue and white porcelain of a specified style with highly detailed decoration to be copied from a library bookplate, following complex heraldic conventions. This order was taken to London by a servant – in itself a risky business in the early 1700’s. The order was given to the East India Company supercargo or captain; the order then went around the world in a sailing boat as one small part of a complex series of deals; it was then delivered to a Chinese merchant in Canton in one of the “factories” or “hongs” on the banks of the Pearl River in Canton. It is claimed that some of the Chinese merchants did not commit the order to paper but relied on their memory. An agreement was then made to return to the trading point in a year’s time to collect the completed order. Hundreds of such orders were produced and survived the journey back to London, the crowds in the auction houses and the journey back to the original country estate in a cart. Many pieces still survive 300 years later.

To cut a long story short, counters were produced to match the personalized porcelain services. The cost of a set of counters was huge (the equivalent of several thousand pounds at today’s prices) so it was only the very richest families which could afford them. Quite a few of the traders, supercargoes and sea captains, however, seem to have managed to procure themselves a set. So these orders often accompanied the orders for armorial porcelain services and will have taken two, perhaps three years to complete. (cited chezbill.com).

(We have an Egyptian antique funerary boat in the store made from a beautiful multi-hued hardstone).

Short History:
The texts are known from the Old Kingdom which speak of giving a (replacement) heart (possibly of stone) to the deceased, but since the heart was usually left in the body during mummification this extra heart did not really have a purpose. During the First Intermediate Period notions appeared about the judgement of the dead, during which the heart had an important role to play (weighing the heart stood for determining that the owner had lived according to the cosmic order and truth or Maat); This text was written on a heart of stone which now was no longer a replacement heart but just carried the text.

Several reasons have been given by Egyptologists for the association of the heart with a scarab, for example that the animal was a symbol of renewal and rebirth.

To cut a long story short, counters were produced to match the personalised porcelain services.

Demand for counters clearly was high. The earliest counters reflect a strong Chinese influence, similar to the original counters, with “sketchy” flowers, single line borders (if any) and sparse decoration. But fashion moved on quickly and new shapes and techniques evolved. The earliest sets were probably in two shapes – rounds and fishes. Oblongs and squares were soon introduced. Borders became more pronounced and then evolved until late in their history they were the dominant feature of the design. Cross-hatching was a technique which soon developed, where fine shading was applied in certain parts of the counter. The quality of the mother-of-pearl develops; edges become milled like coins, counters become larger and thicker. By around 1840, counters have undergone a complete transformation. Covered in stunning iridescent Nacre shell and creating a myriad of colors in various lights. Both with matching silver The ideal gift for a lady with a good sense of style, because these stunning boxes will look great on every vanity table or in any serious collection.

Tea Caddy:
Stunning and entirely handcrafted tea caddy from circa 1860. It is difficult to get your head around how these objects were made. Creating flat pieces of mother-of-pearl and cutting them perfectly and gluing them in perfect patterns onto wooden panels and putting the box together with handcrafted, silver hinges and covering the rims with flat carved bone plaques and putting a small lock in exactly the right place etc. It is almost too much to take in and it must have taken an enormous amount of time to make this stunning box. These boxes therefore were only affordable for the very well to do. To find such a magnificent object in such beautiful condition is a treat. It opens and shuts perfectly. It also comes with the original lid on the inside and it too still fits perfectly. It has its original metal lining to protect the tea from drying out, I believe. Missing one tiny piece of MOP from back of box.

Evolution of the skull. Five Human skull REPLICAS

This is a full-size set of five Human replica skulls that depict the Evolution of the human. 1:1 scale fullsize models. These replica skulls are cast from an unknown material which we believe is more likely than not some sort of composite. The skulls are depicting a breathtaking series of the Fossil Hominid collection and are masterfully and carefully sculpted recreations. Useful for academic study, museum display or for your private collection, these five skulls represent significant periods in human evolution.

The set is exquisitely incased in a wooden and glass display case that measures: 136 cm long x 37 cm high x 27 cm deep with fixtures for easy hanging on the back.

The collection consists of:

-Proconsul Africanus: Proconsul africanus is an ape which lived from about 23 to 14 million years ago during the Miocene epoch. It was a fruit eater and had a brain larger than a monkey, although probably not as large as a modern ape.

-Australopithecus afarensis Lucy: is an extinct hominin that lived between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago. A. afarensis was slenderly built, like the younger Australopithecus africanus. A. afarensis is thought to be more closely related to the genus Homo (which includes the modern human species Homo sapiens), whether as a direct ancestor or a close relative of an unknown ancestor, than any other known primate from the same time. Some researchers include A. afarensis in the genus Praeanthropus. The most famous fossil is the partial skeleton named Lucy (3.2 million years old) found by Donald Johanson and colleagues, who, in celebration of their find, repeatedly played the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

-Homo erectus: is an extinct species of hominin that lived throughout most of the Pleistocene geological epoch. Its earliest fossil evidence dates to 1.9 million years ago and extends to 143,000 years ago.

-Homo Neanderthal : Neanderthals, or more rarely Neandertals, were a species or subspecies of archaic humans in the genus Homo that went extinct about 40,000 years ago. Neanderthals and modern humans share 99.7% of their DNA and are hence closely related.

-Homo Sapien: Homo sapiens is the binomial nomenclature for the only extant human species. Homo is the human genus, which also includes Neanderthals and many other extinct species of hominin; H. sapiens is the only surviving species of the genus Homo. Man as he is today.

“I think [bicycling] has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel… the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.” ― Susan B. Anthony

A absolutely beautiful work of art. Handmade and expertly put together is this beautiful metal base Penny Farthing bike or tricycle with a bronzed antique doll sitting on top. Bronzed in the sense that it seemed to be a real porcelain faced doll that has had her clothes, hair, hat, shoes and basically the entire doll has been bronzed. It is truly breathtaking and I believe OOAK.

Lot of two Antique 19th Century French Gold gilded Snuff Box and snuff bottle

A bargain for this lot collectors of these boxes would agree:

Georgian brass gold gilded snuff box:
A lovely Georgian gold gilded Snuff box dating from around the early 1800’s. The hinged engine turned box is beautifully repoussé technique with stars throughout and motifs around the sides. Little more needs to be said about this stunning piece. It measures: 2 ¾ inches wide 1.50 inches high and 2.00 inches deep.

Victorian Snuff bottle, Chatelaine perfume bottle:
This dainty snuff bottle is an old accessory for a woman’s chatelaine. It was probably considered a scent vial for holding a fine perfume or possibly smelling salts. The round body has a floral design. A beaded strap encompasses the vial culminating near the top where it has hooks. The top portion of the vial has a cap fashioned like leaves. A chain is attached to the side hooks with a loop at the top which would could be added to a chatelaine. The crown like lid slides up and down over the chain for safe keeping. It has its original cork stopper. This piece is from the late 1800’s and was possibly made in France. Overall it measures about 3” long including the large jump ring. The vial measures about 2” to the top of the lid and about by 1 ¼” wide. It is in nice condition with a minor dent.

The snuff box and Chatelaine Perfume or Snuff Bottle has no makers mark or hallmark which was also typical of the time. The overall condition of both pieces is fabulous although slightly worn with no repairs or restoration. These pieces would grace any collection or make that great gift.

OOAK Teddy Bear rare and unusual Old Vintage, Antique Teddy Bear leather German or Russian Teddy collectible

Lovely lovely little girl. She is very old but in great condition. She comes wearing her original (what I believe to be from a flour bag like material) dress.

Standing at 16 inches tall, she is a great size, easy to fit into any collection. She has large glass eyes and is sewn completely from leather. Her arms are attached with strange rare buttons to her body and she also had the same button as a navel.

She is very old and was made around 1900 to 1904. We are selling her with the chair in the photos as we acquired them together. The chair is made from Cherry wood, and has a lovely patina that shows its age. lt meaures 19.00 inches high and the seat is 10.00 inches wide.
I have been unable to successfully identify her but our experts believe she was handmade back in the early 1900's when the teddy bear phenomenom took off as a gift for a child or family and is therefore is probably one of a kind. The origin can be German or Soviet Union.

Egyptian Hardstone River Funerary barge, River Nile, Hand crafted Egyptian funeral barge, Tutankhamun Ancient Egyptian funerary Boat

"A thing of beauty is a joy forever":

Listed here is an Egyptian collector’s dream. We acquired this unusual item from a private collection and its provenance is from Alexandria, Egypt.

The boat made from a beautiful multihued hardstone measures 30.00 cm in length and has hieroglyphs carved on the deck and very beautiful detailed carvings throughout. It has a removable Pharaoh (mummy) lid, with a hidden small chamber under the lid that you can use as a small storage.
Funeral Boats or barges, would have carried The Deceased on their final journey on the Nile, to their tomb.
These boats were also placed in the tombs of the deceased as a way of crossing the River Nile into the afterlife. Only the “upper-crust” ancient Egyptian could afford such an elaborate piece of workmanship.

Obviously inspired by the Egyptian Pharaoh Period, this museum quality replica of a carved hardstone wood Funerary Barge is certainly in a class by itself.

This would definitely enhance any ancient Egyptian collection. It is clear this piece has been loved and cared for, for some time as can be seen in the smoothness and coloration of the stone. It is in excellent condition. #ancientegyptian

Antique Bacchus (Greek god of vine) drinking vessel

A beautiful antique drinking vessel depicting the head of Bacchus or Dionysos Greek god of wine and festivity.
It’s a very unusual vessel either used for Libation or drinking purposes. Quite a fitting tribute to this God of wine to be drinking from his head with his mouth agape. In perfect vintage condition having no chips or cracks or missing pieces. We are not certain of the date on this piece as these dates can range from the first century to and onwards. It has a maker’s mark on the base but we also could find no information on this mark.

It measures: 7.50 inches deep from front to back; 6.3/4 inches from ear to ear.

Most of the Greek deities were adopted by the Romans, although in many cases there was a change of name. Which would explain the Roman maker’s mark on the base of this piece depicting The She wolf suckling Romulus and remus.

A little History:
DIONYSOS (Dionysus) was the Olympian god of wine, vegetation, pleasure, festivity, madness and wild frenzy. He was depicted as either an older, bearded god or an effeminate, long-haired youth. He was usually accompanied by a troop of Satyrs and Mainades (wild female devotees). Dionysos was a son of Zeus and the princess Semele of Thebes. During the course of her pregnancy, the god's jealous wife Hera tricked Semele into asking Zeus to appear before her in his full glory. Bound by oath, the god was forced to comply and she was consumed by the heat of his lightning-bolts. Zeus recovered their unborn child from her body, sewed him up in his own thigh, and carried him to term. Dionysos' most distinctive attribute was the thyrsos, a pine-cone tipped staff. His other attributes included a drinking-cup (kantharos), fruiting grapevines and a panther. The god was usually clothed in a long robe (chiton) and cloak (himation) and crowned with a wreath of ivy-leaves.

These two kapalas date from the first half of the 20th Century and both have a beautiful patina and are in perfect condition. They are both made and carved from a very hard material we believe to be resin but can also be some sort of hardstone.

-The larger skull has three pieces that can be taken apart and measures 6.00 inches high and 4.50 inches from front to back and 4.00 wide.
-The smaller skull has two pieces that can be taken apart and measures 4.50 inches high 4.50 inches from front to back and 3.50 inches wide.

A little History:
The word Kapala is a Sanskirt term meaning skull, bowl, vessel, begging bowl and is a decorative human skull used as a ritual implement in both Hindu and Buddhist Tantra. They were often carved with decorative designs or elaborately mounted with precious metals and jewels. There are two main types of kapalas – those that use a full skull, and those that only use the skull cap or top-half of the cranium. The kapalas were usually made from skulls collected at sky burial sites, an ancient Tibetan burial custom, still practiced today, in which the bodies of the dead are dismembered and scattered over open ground to ‘give alms to the birds’. It is a ritual that has a great religious meaning of the ascent of the soul to be reincarnated into another circle of life. Once collected, the skulls would be specially prepared and elaborately anointed and consecrated before use. It would then be decorated with carvings, jewels of silverwork before being used as a ritual implement. In Tibetan monasteries, the kapala was used to hold dough cakes or wine, used symbolically as flesh and blood offerings to wrathful deities of Hindu India and Buddhist Tibet. When symbolising blood it is called Asrk Kapala, and when with flesh it is called Mamsa Kapala. The dough cakes were not just pieces of bread, but were shaped to resemble human eyes, ears and tongues. Kapalas were also used in and for many other rituals (if interested you can further find on internet).

A little History:

“The Hubley Manufacturing Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, one of the oldest and largest makers of toys in the United States, was founded in 1894 by John E. Hubley to manufacture equipment and accessories for electric trains. Financial difficulties forced Mr. Hubley to sell the entire stock in 1909. At this time the electric train business was discontinued and the cast iron toy business started. Among the first toys produced were a coal range, circus wagons and mechanical banks, all collector's items today.

Following common manufacturing methods of the time, Hubley toys of the 1890s, and for a time thereafter, were cast in sand molds in two parts which were then riveted together to form the toy. All toys were designed by John Hubley, who had remained deeply interested in children's playthings since the time he first made his own children's wooden toys.

In 1936 Hubley started casting in multiple cavity steel dies. Each different toy was started on its own moving assembly line where parts were added, details sprayed on, oiling and inspection took place and the assembly completed. For example, a fire engine took shape on one line. It started as a red chassis. The rubber-tired wheels were added, followed by the spraying on of the radiator, bumpers and headlights. The driver was added, and the ladder, fire axes and other accessories followed. Near the end of the line, the toy was individually boxed and packed in a corrugated container. In 1949, due to union disputes, the foundry was closed. This was a difficult decision for the firm, since Hubley was one of the first companies to devote their entire factory to die casting.
Hubley is now a division of Gabriel Industries, Inc. of New York City and is still making die-cast metal vehicles.”
