Antique tea caddy, Chinese Export Porcelain Tea Caddy Late 18th c

Antique Chinese Export porcelain tea caddy in an rectangular form with a foliate finial of a grape on vine. Very RARE to have the cover as these are usually lost or broken.

The front and back panels are decorated with figurative scenes and landscapes but the main subject seems to be insects and bugs.

The item is hand painted and the talent of the artist is quite profound in realism of the insects.

It was made in China in the late 18th century. The measurements are 1.50" deep by 2.40" Wide by 4.00" High

It is in excellent condition for it's age with a few bumpy rigdets to the base of the cover, that we supposed occured through removing the cover over the years to get at the sweet nectar we call tea.

We cannot distinguish the maker’s mark but it seems to be a Meissen maker’s mark also because of the subject matter and the period that they did this subject. These are always done by hand and can vary in look.

The box measures:
Circa :1880

Dim: L: 20.00cm, D:13.00 cm, H: 12.5 cm. Perfect condition

Impressive large size and outstanding quality

A little History for new collectors:

When buying Limoges, look for telltale marks under the glaze, not on it, on the back or bottom of the piece. Marks were applied on "whiteware," prior to any painting or glazing. If the mark was applied on top of the glaze, that's the work of a retailer, importer or decorator, and it may or may not affect the value of the piece. Under-glaze marks are clearer and less worn than retailer, importer or decorator marks. By 1891, a change in U.S. customs law required country of origin to be marked on porcelain -- so a piece that says "France" dates from after that time and was made for export. Internal sales did not require the "France" mark.

The second half of the 19th century was the golden age of Limoges porcelain. The factories were on the cutting edge of technical expertise that allowed them to secure their reputation for around fifty years. The managers of these factories asserted their personalities and tastes, and regularly called on the expertise of famous artists who came, for the most part, from Paris. In addition, the Universal Expositions proved to be advantageous for them, allowing them to gain quick and widespread notoriety.

A little History:

- The origins of Faenza's ceramics date back many centuries; today, they are still very important as an expression of handicraft and industry. In the Middle Ages, the town became an important ceramics production center, thanks to the nature of its soil, which is rich in day, and to its geographical position. This made it a meeting point between the cultures of Emilia Romagna and Tuscany.
Between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, Faenza's majolica slowly abandons the Gothic motifs that had partially characterized the late medieval production and the first Renaissance period, to acquire more typical Italian decorations. Later on, thanks to more broad-minded artists and to a closer link between potters and painters, we see the passage from a repertory of heraldic and decorative themes to more personal forms of representation of the human figure, which gave birth to a new style called "istoriato". lts name derives from the Italian word "storia" (story), as its main topics are scenes taken from mythology, history or painting.
Faenza is home to the International Museum of Ceramics. The museum houses pieces from all over the world and from every epoch, from classical amphora to the works of Chagall and Picasso, and there is a rich section dedicated to Faenza pottery in the golden age of the Renaissance. The historic production of Faenza majolica is recognized worldwide as one of the highest moments of artistic creativity expressed through pottery.

-An albarello (plural: albarelli) is a type of maiolica earthenware jar, originally a medicinal jar designed to hold apothecaries' ointments and dry drugs. The development of this type of pharmacy jar had its roots in the Middle East during the time of the Islamic conquests.

Delftware or Delft pottery, also known as Delft Blue[1] (Dutch: Delfts blauw), is blue and white pottery made in and around Delft in the Netherlands and the tin-glazed pottery made in the Netherlands from the 16th century.
Delftware in the latter sense is one of the types of tin-glazed earthenware or faience in which a white glaze is applied, usually decorated with metal oxides. It also forms part of the worldwide family of blue and white pottery, using variations of the plant-based decoration first developed in 14th century Chinese porcelain, and in great demand in Europe. Delftware includes pottery objects of all descriptions such as plates, ornaments and tiles. The most highly-regarded period of production is about 1640–1740.
